Serge has been a member of the Ontario Libertarian Party and president of the
Libertarian Party of Canada for many years. He believes strongly in the
libertarian philosophy and has gone to jail in his fight against seat belt
legislation. He has also opposed the PST in court and is currently
fighting the anti-smoking police who have charged him with failing to put up a
"No Smoking" sign on his business premises.
"Forcing me to collect taxes or to enforce smoking laws without compensation is equivalent to slavery," says Jean-Serge. "It may seem like a small thing to some people, but the principle is important to me." He believes that government should not be telling peaceful citizens what they can and cannot do, so long as they are not interfering in the lives of other individuals.
Jean-Serge is 53 years old. He grew up in Embrun and has operated his radiator shop there since 1974 He served as Councillor for Russell Township from 2003 to 2006.
