In his school studies he came to embrace the libertarian ideology; imagine a society with freedom of choice, freedom of movement, freedom of advancement, and freedom of will – how divine! Enamored by such an auspicious idea he was inspired to promote the doctrine of more independence and less government. Why should anyone be subject to the confluence of filibustering, squabbling, and back door deals rampant at the federal and provincial levels of government? Why should some arcane entity be making all our decisions for us? Why are we forced to capitulate to a government who flagrantly takes our hard earned money and allocates it as they please? Why can’t we choose our own destiny, make our own decisions, and determine our own fate without having to worry about how our government is “working for us”? It is lingering questions like these that made Aaron Parent decide to take action and spread the good word of the Ontario Libertarian Party. Albeit a difficult concept to initially grasp (a society with less government) it is, by far, the sanest way to bring about peace and reduce discord. Let the people choose for themselves! Eliminate wasteful spending, vested interests, and futile taxation. Bring about life, liberty, and less government!

I am the Ontario Libertarian Party’s candidate for the riding of Essex. Now just what does the libertarian party stand for you might ask? Well, we proudly endorse ourselves as “the party of choice”. Choice is an integral component to civil liberty that we value but never have the ability to fully exercise. This is because the government has engrained it in our minds that we need them to make decisions for us. While incumbents and candidates attempt to placate and appease you with what they can do for you, the real question should be what can you do for you? We should all have the ultimate freedom to choose the best in health, education, and environmental policy without a government implementing futile taxation to pay for institutionalized programs that they cannot support.
With regards to health care, the Ontario Libertarian Party supports privatization. This may seem drastic at first, but when we no longer have to pay exorbitant taxes for our crumbling Medicare system, long wait times, and blatant understaffing, we are left with a lot more money in our pockets to choose the best services competing for our business. Currently, many Canadians seek medical treatment in the U.S. because it is far superior in service. Unfortunately, it is not free market like a libertarian health system would be. The U.S. government imposes extended coverage on insurance policies for political reasons. In a libertarian system, the government would be virtually non-existent in dictating health care and could not impose such action on the private insurers who would emerge to protect us from major illnesses. Competition amongst competing firms would ensure reasonable rates and abusive, frivolous use of the health system will be diminished with proper monitoring by insurers. Doctors would be privately certified by established medical institutions, allowing for an influx of practitioners offering their services rather than a government-imposed shortage, in order to save money. When there is no more Minister of Health Ontarians will have competitively priced, widely accessible, high quality health care.
The education system continues to be tinkered and fiddled with, yet there always seems to be serious shortcomings on behalf of the government. Quality education will become prevalent when bureaucrats, through the Ministry of Education, aren’t fiscally limiting what can be accomplished. Once education taxation is abolished parents will have more money to choose the best education for their children. Political arguments over academic goals and standards, teacher credentialing, school accreditation, curriculum, financing, and all other bones of contention will be eradicated. This will pave the way for innovation and advancement for young flourishing minds. Training the mind should be exciting and empowering, not an ordeal inflicted by government squabbling. Liberty encourages benevolence and the creation of wealth, which yields spontaneous voluntary help for needy children as well. Great progress and innovation has been achieved when there is limited government intervention. The same will be said for a libertarian approach to education.
The environment would also thrive in a libertarian system as oppressive land management laws such as the Greenbelt Act would be repealed by citizens. When landowners have complete control over their land they would not want to diminish its value by contaminating or polluting it. The Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources holds jurisdiction over 88% of the land in Ontario. In a libertarian society, public lands would be auctioned off to private individuals, businesses, and groups such as First Nations communities to monitor and nourish. Currently, when lakes are polluted the government threatens the offenders with fines. When lakes are divided among property owners for their fish and resources, pollution would be curtailed, as concerned owners would want to ensure the sustenance of their possessions. Property would be exclusive to its owners and anyone who felt harmed or perturbed by the alleged misuse of someone else’s land would resolve their disputes judiciously rather than resorting to government intervention. Natural resources would become the property of those who access them, based on agreements with landowners who control the source. The government would no longer supervise consumptive uses of water and free market solutions would prevail.
Taxation does not have to be a necessary evil; the Ontario Libertarian Party supports abolishing sales tax, a flat income tax rate, and dedicated taxation whereby taxes are allocated to their specific purpose rather than being placed in a “general revenue” pot. Keeping taxation to a minimum ensures competitive advantage amongst companies contending for business which yields fair prices and fiscal balance.
A libertarian government will be a limited, minimal government. With that comes freedom, harmony, and abundance. There will be endless possibilities for recognition, respect, and individual liberty. We should be able to choose what WE want in health, education, and environmental policy not what our government thinks we want or hopes we’ll accept based on their inability to manage money. Naturally, we want the best. With unrestricted, unbridled choice you have far more options, abilities, and less worries about how your government may or may not be “working for you”. On October 10th, vote for life, liberty, and less government; vote for Aaron Parent and the Ontario Libertarian Party.
