Proposed Keg Registry is a Strange Brew

January 6, 2007 - More than one Ontario police agency is calling for the establishment of a provincial beer keg registry in a bid to crack down on "out-of-control" parties near postsecondary school campuses. A Hamilton police spokesman hopes to be able to able to use the proposed keg registry to visit the homes of keg purchasers "proactively".

The Ontario Libertarian Party opposes the establishment of a government beer keg registry on the grounds that it constitutes a gross violation of the right to privacy, and will cost the taxpayer or consumer extra money in order to fund the registry. Ontario Libertarians believe that the right to privacy must be protected, and that Ontarians should not be subject to preemptive police visits to their home or surveillance by the police for the victimless act of purchasing a beer keg.
